Chinese restaurant workers caught washing supplies, rags in lake

No wonder their prices were low.

Health officials in Tennessee shut down a Chinese restaurant this week after a video showed workers washing rags, a rack and other tools in a nearby lake.

At least two of them were seen washing the supplies and then bringing them back into the building, according to cellphone footage.

The incident happened at No. 1 Chinese Restaurant in suburban Nashville and forced officials to inspect the facility.

As a result of the inspectors findings, the Health Department is closing the restaurant due to a potential imminent health hazard and is requiring the restaurant operator to wash and disinfect all food prep surfaces and equipment before the establishment is allowed to reopen, the countys Metro Public Health Department said in a statement.

The owners daughter, Michelle Pan, said the items that were washed in the lake were for personal use and never came into the restaurant, contradicting the footage of two people walking into the facility with the supplies.

This is the first time they have taken the drain and rack to the lake to wash, she said, adding that the items never directly touched any food.

Officials said the owners claimed cultural reasons for using lake water for washing kitchen tools.

Social media users who wrote on the restaurants Facebook page this week were mostly shocked and disgusted.

I will NEVER eat there again! Facebook user Carol Rubin wrote.

The opinion was not unanimous, however.

After all this scrutiny, you can bet they are going to have a cleaner and more sanitary restaurant than 99.9% of other places in the area, Facebook user Steve Barnes wrote. I would go out of my way to give them my business. I imagine this family puts their heart and soul into this restaurant.
