Father dumps his young son outside a shop in a duffel bag

A father in China has been caught on camera dumping his three-year-old son outside a shop after stuffing him into a duffel bag.

The man, 53-year-old Mr Qu, said the boy's mother had deserted them and he could no longer afford to raise the child, therefore he had no way but to abandon him, according to a note he left in the bag.

The boy has been taken to an orphanage and the father is now under police custody, reported Chinese media.

Surveillance footage released by police show the boy's father carrying a duffel bag which contains the boy before leaving the bag outside a shop

The incident took place at around 5pm on November 16 in the city of Laixi in eastern China's Shandong Province.

Surveillance footage released by police shows a man walking up to a shop while carrying a bag.

He is seen putting the bag down before turning away and leaving. The clip shows him looking around a few times before walking off.

The man is the child's father Mr Qu, according to Qingdao Television Station.

About an hour later, another man wearing a helmet discovered the bag outside the shop.

Instead of calling the police, the man, believed to be a worker at the shop, carried the bag and walked towards a restaurant nearby. He then put the bag outside the restaurant.

The child was discovered four hours later at around 10pm when he climbed out of the bag on his own crying. Onlookers immediately called the police.

Police discovered a piece of paper left by the boy's father inside the bag.

The boy's father is said to have travelled some 140 kilometres (87 miles) from a nearby city, Yantai, before choosing the spot in Laixi to leave the boy.

The man claimed that the child was born in November 2016 out of wedlock and that the boy's mother had abandoned them.

He claimed to suffer from various diseases and have no income.

The boy was eventually found outside a restaurant on Weihai Road in Laixi (pictured) after being dumped by his father outside a shop and moved by an unidentified man to here

The note also said that the father hoped that kind-hearted people could find the boy and adopt him.

The boy was found to be healthy by doctors after officers took him to the hospital for a check-up.

He has been taken to Qingdao Children's Welfare Institution to be looked after.

Police have taken formal enforcement measures against Mr Qu and further investigation is underway.

According to the Chinese criminal law, parents who abandon their minors could face up to five years in prison.
