Mom holds her son in the street after a valve landed on his head

This footage shows a crying mother holding her unconscious son who is fighting for his life after being struck by a metal valve which fell from 21 storeys onto his head.

The boy, aged three years and 10 months, was walking home from nursery school with his mother, Zhong Lingfang, when the incident happened in the city of Dongyang in East China's Zhejiang Province on Thursday.

Ms Zhong, who lives in the Zijing Zhuangyuan Residential District, said: 'One second he was eating a banana and holding my hand, and the next he collapsed on the ground.

The building the valve fell from in the city of Dongyang in East China's Zhejiang Province yesterday, pictured left, was undergoing renovations when the piece of metal, pictured right, fell and sent the child to intensive care

'He wasn't crying and made no sound. His head was covered in blood.'

According to the police, the boy, whose family name is Ouyang, was struck on the head by a metal angle valve weighing roughly 3lb.

The authorities arrested a renovation worker surnamed Zu, 29, who told investigators he accidentally knocked the valve off an air-conditioning unit he was soldering on the twenty first floor.

He accidentally burned his hand, causing him to fling the chunk of metal.

The tot was taken to Dongyang People's Hospital where he has since undergone a five-hour emergency operation.

Intensive care nurse Ying Manzhen said the nursery school pupil was still comatose after his surgery.

He is breathing with the help of a respiratory machine and the hospital's priority is to keep him alive, Ying said.

The workman remains in custody as investigations continue.
