Woman flees after stealing her friend's five-day-old daughter

A woman in China has been detained after allegedly stealing a friend's five-day-old daughter to prove to her family she had given birth.

The suspect, known by her surname Yang, had a miscarriage when she was three months pregnant.

But she did not tell her family about the misfortune and pretended to still be pregnant out of fear that her family would blame her for losing the baby, according to police.

As her due date drew closer, Ms Yang thought about 'adopting' a baby.

She came across a new mother, known by her surname Liu, while undergoing a physical examination last Thursday at a hospital in the city of Tongren in Guiyang Province.

After knowing that Ms Liu had just given birth to a baby, she posed as a friend to gain Ms Liu's trust while allegedly planning to abduct the girl.

According to police, Ms Yang went to visit Ms Liu on Saturday morning, claiming that she wanted to rent a room from her.

She then told Ms Liu her phone was running out of battery and needed to stay at her home for a few hours to charge her handset.

After Ms Liu and her newborn child fell asleep, Ms Yang snatched the girl and fled, local Wanshan Police said in a statement on its official social media account.

After reaching home, Ms Yang called her family to tell them that she had given birth while at home, police added.

Footage released shows Ms Yang running on a road in the Wanshan District of Tongren while carrying a bag which contained the newborn.

Another clip shows her sitting in the bed, pretending to have given birth.

Wanshan Police were alerted of the situation at 3pm that day by Ms Liu, who told them her baby had gone missing at home.

Upon investigation, officers locked down Ms Yang as the suspect and caught her in her flat two hours later.

They rescued the newborn baby, who remained unhurt.

Ms Yang's family only realised that they had been lied to when police came to their house to detain Ms Yang.

She has been detained by police on suspicion of child abduction.
