Chinese basketball coach slaps a fan during a live game

The coach of a Chinese basketball club has been caught on camera slapping a spectator in the face during a live game.

Television footage shows the emotional Slovenian manager, who heads the Jiangsu Dragons in eastern China, walking to one side of the court before hitting and shoving a member of the audience who was wearing a white T-shirt.

The 58-year-old coach, Memi Beirovi, and the fan were both expelled from the game by the referee after a video review, according to state media.

The fight was broadcast to sports fans around the country yesterday during a home game for the Dragons against Liaoning Flying Leopards.

It is said that the spectator had insulted Lance Stephenson, a former NBA player who now serves the Leopards, by giving the athlete the middle finger.

He had also argued with Mr Beirovi's wife, who had been watching the game and had criticised him for his rude gesture.

Mr Beirovi was seen physically attacking the spectator in the third quarter when there was five minutes and 36 seconds left to play.

The pair had to be separated by players and staff of the arena.

Although the man whom Mr Beirovi hit was initially reported to be an ordinary fan, the local sports authority said later that he was actually a member of the Jurong Basketball Association.

The Jurong Cultural, Sports, Broadcasting and Tourism Bureau said in a social media statement today that it would strengthen its management over affiliated organisations.

The Bureau added that the Jurong Basketball Association was a non-governmental organisation and that the member, known by his surname Wang, was not a government official.

The Jiangsu Dragons is a club under the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) based in Suzhou, a city near Shanghai with a population of 10 million.

The team lost yesterday's game by 103 to 111.

Mr Beirovi is facing an automatic one-match court-side ban.

The ban is subjected to an extension pending an investigation from the CBA.
