Man threatens to kill himself for cancelling birthday party

A man in south-western China has been arrested after dousing himself with petrol and tying firecrackers around his waist because authorities cancelled his birthday banquet as a precaution against the spread of the coronavirus.

The villager, a 59-year-old surnamed Wang, had planned to hold a banquet with 10 tables late last month in Yongchuan District of Chongqing.

But with authorities across China restricting public gatherings to contain the outbreak, officials told Wang to cancel the birthday party.

Hundreds of millions of people across China face restrictions and interruptions to their lives due to efforts to contain the coronavirus outbreak.

Beijing's municipal authorities announced last week that parties and group dinners at restaurants would be temporarily forbidden in the Chinese capital to prevent the spread of the virus.

The pictures released by a Chinese news outlet show the gasoline, firecrackers and lighter used by the perpetrator

After his banquet was cancelled, the Chongqing resident showed up at a village committee office armed with petrol and firecrackers, which he tied around his waist.

After having an argument with the committee officers, the man also poured gasoline on his chest and held out a lighter in an attempt to 'scare and threaten the village committee into allowing the birthday party'.

Although nobody was harmed, there were over 10 patients being treated in the village clinic downstairs as the incident taking place and two of them were transferred immediately.

Local procurators filed charges of disorderly behaviour against Wang and arrested him last Tuesday, according to an official announcement released by the Chongqing Procuratorate

The Chinese villager was then contained by the local police and held in custody on the same day.
