Two students suddenly drop dead while running with masks on

The sudden deaths of two young students on the track in China have sparked public concerns about kids being forced to take part in PE class while wearing masks.
On April 30, a 14-year-old boy died suddenly during a 1 km fitness test at his school in Changsha, Hunan province. During the run, the boy was wearing an N95 mask.
His death followed that of another schoolboy in Henan province who also collapsed when running laps while wearing a mask on April 24. He was 15 years old.
Following the coronavirus outbreak, kids across China have been returning back to school over the past month but are required to wear face masks at all times while on school grounds.

While running with a face mask on is obviously not optimal, there is no evidence that these two deaths were actually caused by the masks rather than underlying health factors.

Chinese health experts have attempted to calm the public about the incidents, noting that while wearing a mask while running does reduce the amount of oxygen you inhale, it is not known to cause sudden deaths.
Still, a number of Chinese provinces and localities, including Shanghai, arent taking any chances and have banned running tests and PE exams for the time being.
