Today we would like to discuss the the difference between b and mi, which both means no; not in English.

Firstlets check the sentences as follows:

  + V / adj: 

T b q Shng hi. T  b  shu.


 +  V / adj

T mi q Shng hi . T mi shu .

verb   adj

First and are both adverbwhichcan be followed by verb or adjectives.

Part 1/+ Verb/Adj.

is mainly negate objective facts, which is often used in the past and present tense.

For instance:

W zutin mi li xuxio

in the past

I didnt come to school yesterday.

Zhge dinno mi hui.

(in the present)

This cell phone is not broken.

For example:

W zutin b shf, suy w qngji le.

In the past

I didnt feel well yesterday, so I asked for leave.

W xin zi b  .

in the present

Im not hungry now.

W mng tin b q  xu xio.

(in the future)

I wont go to school tomorrow.

also used to negate an habitual action. for example:

T  zh ch  shci b ch ru.

He only eat vegetables, and  does not eat meat.

T b chuyn b hji.

He doesnt smoke or drink.

Part 2 /+verb

/ can be followed by modal verbs or mental verbs, but

only goes with a limited number of modal verbs and mental verbs, for example:

+ nng / gn /xing.... its always  in the past events.

I couldnt help him.

W mi xing bng t.

I didn't want to help him.

can be followed by all modal verbs and mental verbs.

T b hu kich.

He cant drive.

W b xhuan kndinsh

I dont like watching TV.  

W jntin b xing ch jiozi.

I dont want to eat dumplings today.

N  b  ynggi  h ti du.

You shouldnt drink too much.


modal verbs:

nngk yhuk nngyoyng gi .....

mental verbs:

1. W jntin (  )xing zi ji chfnw xing chq ch.

3. W (  )nng bng t, w jude dubuq t.


Part 3

To negate the verb yuyou can only use mi asmi yu

W  yu gge --w miyu gge.


To negate the verb sh you can only use b asb sh

W sh losh -- w bsh losh.


Part 4/ +Adj./Noun

only can be followed by a few adjectives, and negate the change of a situation.

T de bng himi ho.

She is not well yet.

Hoji b jin, n mipng y mishu, h yqin yyng.


Long time no see, you look the same as before. ( neither gain or lose weight.)


can be followed by most adjectives  to negate the state of somebody or something. For example:

T de ddi b go

His younger brother is not tall.

Zhjin yfu b hokn

This cloth is not quite nice.
