China allows tour groups to travel across provinces again

Following a half-year hiatus, China is allowing tour groups to venture out across provincial borders once again.

The announcement this week from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism contains some stipulations, including:

  • Tour groups still are prohibited to travel to areas with medium or high risk of Covid-19 transmission.

  • Tourist attractions will be limited to 50 percent capacity (up from the previous 30 percent).

  • Travel agencies must provide sufficient protective materials for their groups, including masks, gloves, and body temperature testing equipment.

Along with cinemas, Chinas tourism industry is one of the last sectors of the economy to get a restart with the coronavirus outbreak now mostly contained within the country.

While tourists have still been traveling individually and within their own province for months, travel agencies remain hard hit by the pandemic.

Tour groups remain banned from going abroad, meaning that we could soon quite a rush in domestic hotspots like Hainan.
