Q&A: Where To Get HIV Test/Meds in Changsha

HELP!

As part of WNIC's free information service to foreign guests residing in Changsha, we have decided to release this guide on where and how to get emergency HIV testing and medication (along with other STDs). Bear in mind, the below info should be checked before going there (we have included contact details and/or official Chinese clinic names where possible). Take ID, plenty of cash and -ideally- a trustworthy Chinese friend.

If you feel you may have been exposed to someone with HIV you should seek the PEP medicine (see below for more) which must be taken within 72 hours of possible exposure. The chances of contracting HIV is extremely low, but if you want to get help or meds, then these locations below should be able to help. Remember, our guide is advice ONLY. Details, testing venues and medicine availability may change over time. See the links below for more info medical provision in Changsha:

What is PEP?

PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) means taking medicine to prevent HIV after a possible exposure. PEP should be used only in emergency situations and must be started within 72hours after a recent possible exposure to HIV.

Talk right away (within 72 hours) to your health care provider about PEP if you think youve recently been exposed to HIV:

  • 1.       during sex (for example, if the condom broke),

  • 2.       through sharing needles, syringes, or other equipment to inject drugs (for example, cookers), or

  • 3.       if youve been sexually assaulted.

The sooner you start PEP, the better. Every hour counts. If youre prescribed PEP, youll need to take it daily for 28 days.

PEP is for Emergency Situations.

  • 1.       PEP is given after a possible exposure to HIV.

  • 2.       PEP is not a substitute for regular use of other HIV prevention.

  • 3.       PEP is not the right choice for people who may be exposed to HIV frequently.

How well does PEP work?

If taken within 72hours after possible exposure, PEP is highly effective in preventing HIV. But to be safe, you should take other actions to protect your partners while youare taking PEP.  This includes always using condoms with sexual partners and not sharing needles, syringes, or other equipment to inject drugs.

Are there any side effects?

  • 1.       PEP is safe but may cause side effects like nausea insome people.

  • 2.       In almost all cases, these side effects can be treatedand arent life-threatening.

Below is our researched information and advice if you feel you need a HIV test and the PEP emergency medication while in Changsha (based on what expats have reported to us and our communication with hospital contacts and doctors):

1. Changsha Public Health Treatment Center

Located in the hills to the north of Changsha, this isolated hospital focuses almost exclusively on HIV and AIDS. Meds can be administered on almost any day, including weekends (but better to arrive early). It may be possible to arrive, get tested and receive PEP all on the same day. This could be your best bet if you need the PEP meds. English is not spoken at the hospital. However, it is a descreet hospital and they can get you PEP on the same day (time permitting).

2. Want Want International Hospital

Want Want Hospital, located in the East of the city, offers a high end service and can give prescriptions for meds during weekdays only. See our website for a full description of the hospital, all it's services and opening times (via Read More at the end of this article): Want Want Hospital & WNIC form partnership (wnichangsha.com)

Please call Dr. Sun Phone#15575155288who can initiate medications to prevent HIV acquisition and will monitor you during your treatment course. All appointments and testing is kept confidential.

3. Hotline & PEP delivery service

Another option would be to try this online service which promises home delivery (same day is possible). Call their customer service on 17824855523. Although it's not clear how this service works, as a doctor's prescription is usually needed to get PEP, but it's a service which does exist and offers delivery.

4.  Changsha Infectious Diseases Hospital

This is a small hospital which includes the testing and drug administering for HIV. It's not fully known if they operate daily and whether any meds could be reached on the same day, but we have been assured that it is. This hospital is just a short walk from Furong Square subway station.

5.  Changsha Xiangya Number 2 Hospital

This is one of Changsha's biggest and most respected hospitals which has it's own small HIV testing section. However, note that any such service may be limited to weekdays (and quite possibly not every day of the working week).

Good luck

(feel free to let us know any changes you encounter)
